Shifting the Blame

By Kathryn C. Lang

My writing opportunities continue to expand. My dreams continue to grow. My results stay the same . . . and I look around wondering how these opportunities are not meeting up with my dreams.

I want to blame someone else. I want to point the finger at the economy. I want to deflect the truth from where is sits squarely – I am not where I want to be because I am not doing what I know I need to do.

All of the words of encouragement from friends and family will not get me there.
All of the plans for the future (and for the now) will not get me there.
All of the “ifs,” “buts,” and “maybes” will not get me there.

Intentions are great, but they do not build dreams. Only my actions will ever take me to that place of exceeding abundance that I desire. I can, if I think I can and then act in a way that brings the thoughts to life.

So, even though I want to point in another direction, I know where the true and only fault lies. I am squandering my “talents.” If I want to be in that place of the servant that received more, then I have to take action. I have to put the talents to work with a heart determined to reach the purpose of the Master and bless Him upon His return.

It is not about my feelings – although feelings will always try to step in the way.
It is not about the others around me – although people have a tendency to put a kink in my day.
It is not about my circumstances – although circumstances will push me to run or tie me down and make me stay.

Developing Consistency for Action

- do something. Something will often lead to something else which may end me up in the place where I should have been all along. Not doing something will increase the difficulty of getting started in the first place. Momentum begets momentum begets momentum . . . do something.

- get away. The clutter of life can hinder hope. I love my family, but sometimes a few moments alone can be all that I need to recharge. Alone, I can be still. Still, I can hear. When I hear the direction then I can be secure in my steps. Sometimes I have to be willing to get away.

- offer praise. Thank the Lord for all that He has done – in the moment, in the day and in life. Look around at all of the amazing blessings. Write down the good, positive and uplifting things. Hope and faith thrive in a heart committed to offer praise.

“You have been chosen by the ultimate judge above for many great things ahead. I see the light around you.” These words were recently shared with me about my walk and my writing. Confirmation that I am aimed in the right direction. Now I just have to be willing to fire!

What actions will you take to begin the momentum towards your dreams?

Beyond Imagination

By Kathryn Lang

Today, someone posted on Facebook (on a page where my debut novel, RUN, was mentioned) that he had a copy of my book and I would soon be a literary star.

Yesterday, I spoke before a group of writers at various stages of their careers and challenged them to take the steps into the dreams.

At this moment, I still find myself struggling between doing what I know I need to do to reach my own dreams and taking a break because I want to take a break.

Fortunately, I need to write a guest post and that is the little extra push I need to get me moving back in the direction that will land me at the “literary star” mentioned earlier.

Top Tips for Getting Your Push Beyond Imagination

- Find some accountability. I find there are two ways to best hold my feet to the fire. One is to ask someone to check up on me regularly. Two is to announce a release time for something. Today I announced that my second novel would be ready for release by early fall. Laying out a deadline like that makes it tough to wiggle around.

- Find some encouragement. Having other people – that are not related to me and have not known me all  my life – that are yelling out my praises on Facebook provides enough inspiration to bring tears to my eyes. Knowing that others believe in your pursuits and your possibilities can pour fuel on an ember and light your world on fire.

- Find some time. Getting anywhere requires an investment and time will always be a component of that investment. I have to choose to release some things in my life in order to carve out a slot for my writing. And then I have to choose to utilize that time to write.

Dreams can come true. Becoming a literary star sits within my grasp . . . but I have to reach out, get moving, make that dream a reality in my life.

Dare to Dream

By Michael Elmore

Back in 1989 a movie which was later to become a cult classic was released in theaters nation-wide. It was called “The Field of Dreams.” You can watch the movie trailer at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKL-j0vXzqI&feature=related  .  In the film, a disembodied voice speaks to Kevin Costner through a dream. He hears a voice that tells him, “If you build it, he will come.” Of course the dream was about meeting his father whom he only slightly knew and experiencing a relationship with his dad that he had missed as a child. Kevin Costner’s character, “Ray”, had a significant dream that changed his life and impacted the lives of countless people around the globe making them realize the importance of having a dream.

Psychologists agree that the ability to dream is vital to the well-being of the human psyche. Dreams are at times full of meaningless drivel that doesn’t really matter in the scheme of all things and at other times they are have significant value. The pages of the Bible are filled with accounts of important biblical characters that God spoke to them through relevant, meaningful and significant dreams. Genesis records the life of Joseph whose dreams affected not only his destiny to become second-in-command of all Egypt, but saved the lives of his family as well as the future nation of Israel. In fact, we often refer to him as “the dreamer.” Joseph’s dreams and the dreams of scores of others throughout the Bible impacted countless lives. They continue to do so to this very day.

Dreams can be significant and can be pathways through which God speaks to us. He continues to speak to us today through the dreams he places in our hearts. Joel 2:28 tells us this very things, “In the last days,” the Lord says, “I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams and your young men will see visions.” The Bible says that God still puts dreams in the human hearts!

I believe that God speaks to us many times by putting dreams within our hearts. I ask you today, “What dream has God placed in your heart?” God has a vision, yes even a dream for your life. If you only have faith, I believe that God will fulfill the dream that He has given you. The secret is that God’s dreams do not just remain dreams but with the empowerment of His Spirit, our dreams will become reality. Even broken, crushed or unfulfilled dreams can become reality if we simply put our trust in God.

What’s Your Dream?

By Shelly Atkins

When we were little kids, we dreamed about the amazing things we would do when we grew up. Somewhere along the line, we gave up on these dreams. Maybe someone told us we didn’t really have the athletic talent an Olympic gold medal swimmer, or some one said hardly anyone makes it as a singer on Broadway. Or maybe it’s just not practical to jump on an airplane and travel the world. I mean, how would you make any money?

And that’s what it boiled down to for me. I couldn’t possibly be a writer, how would I make any money. So I tried other practical things like teaching and journalisim. But those aren’t my passions. Not my dreams. Not what I wanted to be when I grew up. I’d lost my vision, my dream for my future. I was letting life take me on a journey without a map. I didn’t like the direction I was going, but felt powerless to do anything about it. I had lost my vision.

Without vision, we wander around in the dark both literally (if we lose the ability to see with our eyes) and figuratively (if we loose the ability to discern with our hearts.) The dictionary defines vision as “the act or power of anticipating that which will or may come to be.” (from www.dictionary.com). Isn’t that faith?

A few months ago, someone on a social network I’m a part of asked the question, “If you could change your situation, the way you fill your days, what would you do?” The answer for me was simple: I’d quit my job and work as a freelance writer full time.

But the first rule of freelacing is: DON’T QUIT YOUR DAY JOB.

I haven’t ever really been one to follow all the rules. The more I thought and prayed about quitting, the more I wanted to do it. But I was scared. What if all those fears I kept telling my self were true? All those fears that kept me in a job for years: What if I wasn’t good enough? What if I didn’t make any money? What if I quit and I hate freelancing?

Last week I put in notice at my job at a local newspaper. I have a little over a month left. I feel free now to work on what I want to do, interview and research the things that interest me and fill my writing days with my own stories and ideas.

Quitting has taken a great leap of faith. But isn’t that vision? I have a vision now, I’m working on turning that vision into goals and setting steps to achieve those goals. I have a map and am dictating my own journey.

What’s your vision? Are you writing it down and working towards it? What do you need to get there?

Introducing Lori Boruff

A Flying Lesson from Mary Poppins

What was your 'big girl' or 'big boy' dream when you were little?

Did you dream of being a teacher? A superhero? A princess? Did your dream come true?

My six year old dream was to fly....but not in an airplane.
I wanted to fly like magical Mary Poppins

Surely a windy, Midwestern day and mom's umbrella could take me where I wanted to go.

SLAM went the screen door.
POP went the umbrella.
OH NO – Away I go!

I hung onto the umbrella for dear life.
Up, up and away I began to go to the very tip of my tippy toes.
Guess what happened?

I got scared.
I pulled down the umbrella with all my might.
My feet became firmly planted on the ground.

Slam went the screen door.
Safe and sound in my corner of the world....
Whew went this little girl.

Today, I think about that exciting adventure and wonder....
Can dreams come true if we aren't afraid to fly?

Reflect on these questions:
  • What is my 'big girl' or 'big boy' dream?
  • Where do I want to go?
  • Do I focus on “I can't...” or “How can I...”
  • Am I afraid to fly?

Face your fear and dream big. Don't miss the adventure God has in store for you!
